JUDAH LOOP – August 27, 2011

Ability Level: Intermediate
Miles: 4-7
Elevation Gain: 700-1,300 feet
Tour Time: Varies
Start Time: 9:30AM – Meet at the Cedar House Lobby
Price: $65.00 per person

Description:
We begin this hike in the territory made infamous by the story of the Donner Party tragedy in 1847. As you hike, your guides will share with you the history of the area around Donner Pass, the final high pass in the pioneers’ journey west of the Rockies -- a fatal final challenge for many.

Enjoy spectacular scenery as we trek on portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,000+ mile trail that travels from Mexico to Canada, and the historic Emigrant Trail. This beautiful loop section is alive with wildflowers in the early summer, but no matter what time of year, it offers outstanding alpine vistas.

Along the trail, we will be awarded with views of three scenic peaks: Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Judah and Donner Peak. Depending on the group’s choice, we have the option of hiking to the summit of one or more of these peaks.

Miles: 15.3
Elevation Gain: 2700 feet
Tour Time: All day
Start Time: 7:00AM – Meet at the Cedar House Lobby

Description:
Our hiking escape begins at 7,060 feet and takes us on the famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which runs from Canada to Mexico.

In the entire Tahoe Sierra, perhaps no other stretch of PCT provides better views than this hike. One hiker recommended it for “a cornucopia of optic delight.”

This trail may hold snow until mid-summer and then, in a sudden warm spell, emerge offering lush fields of wildflowers and trickling creeks. This portion of the PCT offers many diverse views: mountain peaks, rivers, Donner Lake, spectacular wilderness areas and Lake Tahoe.

The hike ends by descending into Olympic Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

If you love hard long hikes and want diverse and impressive panoramic scenes, we highly recommend this hike.
